It is with utmost delight that I share with you the extraordinary journey of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at our prestigious institution CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar. Since its inception in 1971, our department has remained steadfast in its commitment in delivering excellence in the fields of Statistics and Mathematics, molding future statisticians and mathematicians who transcend boundaries and excel in diverse domains.

Our department encompasses three pivotal pillars: teaching, research, and consultancy. We provide comprehensive courses in Mathematics and Statistics, catering to undergraduate and postgraduate students hailing from esteemed colleges within our university. These include the college of Agriculture, Basic Sciences & Humanities, Agricultural Engineering & Home Sciences, as well as the College of Agriculture in Kaul and Bawal. This interdisciplinary approach ensures that our students receive a well-rounded education, equipping them to tackle real-world challenges with unwavering competence.

At the very core of our department lies a robust research program, focusing on both theoretical foundations and practical applications, with a special emphasis on utilizing Statistics and Mathematics in the realms of agriculture and related fields. Our esteemed faculty actively supports research endeavors across various disciplines, while concurrently conducting innovative research of their own. We take immense pride in offering M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Statistics and Mathematics, empowering our students to pursue advanced knowledge and expertise in their chosen areas of specialization.

An integral objective of our department is to provide statistical consultancy to researchers and students within the university. We also organize specialized training programs tailored to meet the unique needs of researchers. By developing frameworks for the application of modern statistical techniques in agricultural and allied sciences, we strive to foster innovation, enhance productivity, and propel advancement within these domains.

Over the years, our department has achieved remarkable milestones. Our well-trained students enjoy abundant opportunities in teaching and research positions, both in academic institutions and private sectors. Competent statisticians are highly sought after for their invaluable expertise in business analytics, marketing research, industrial quality control, and consultancy roles within multinational companies. We proudly assert that our students are meticulously prepared to confront and conquer any challenges that may arise throughout their professional journeys.

To ensure the highest standard of education, the courses offered by our department undergo regular revisions in accordance with the esteemed recommendations of the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) at the national level. This steadfast commitment ensures that our curriculum remains current, relevant, and aligned with industry demands. Furthermore, the achievements of our esteemed alumni, who hold prestigious positions in universities, research institutes, and renowned organizations at both national and international levels, serve as a testament to the exceptional quality of education provided by our department.

In terms of admissions, we meticulously admit an average of two students in the M.Sc. program and six students in the Ph.D. program each year. At present, we have the privilege of nurturing thirteen M.Sc. students and twenty-six Ph.D. students. While we do not offer an undergraduate program, we extend our academic offerings through two undergraduate courses to students of the College of Agricultural Engineering & Technology, as well as an undergraduate course to students of the Indira Chakravarty College of Home Science.

Allow me to provide you with vital information regarding the history and accomplishments of our esteemed degree programs. The M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Statistics were initiated in 1971 with the primary objective of producing exceptionally skilled professionals in the field. The entry qualification for the Master's program is a B.Sc./B.Sc. (Hons.) degree in Medical/Non-Medical/Statistics/Agriculture, with a minimum duration of two years and a maximum duration of four years. The Ph.D. program in Statistics requires a Master's degree in any Statistics/Agricultural Statistics/Applied Statistics discipline.

Similarly, the M.Sc. and Ph.D. programs in Mathematics were established in 2019 to nurture adept mathematicians. The entry qualification for the M.Sc. program is a graduate degree with Mathematics as one of the subjects, while the Ph.D. program mandates a Master's degree in Mathematics/Applied Mathematics.

The accomplishments of our M.Sc. programme in both disciplines are truly commendable, encompassing a well-developed infrastructure and active student participation in conferences, symposia, and training programs.

As we reflect upon our journey thus far, it fills us with immense pride to witness the substantial contributions and positive impact generated by the Department of Mathematics and Statistics. With unwavering dedication, we shall continue to stride forward, nurturing exceptional talent, expanding the frontiers of knowledge, and fortifying our position as a center of excellence in Statistics and Mathematics education.

Together, let us embark on a journey of relentless pursuit of academic brilliance, research innovation, and holistic growth.

Infrastructural Development

  • The department has a Botanical Garden spread over an area of 10.5 acres with rich biodiversity. The department has done pioneering work in conserving the indigenour local species of plant and also introduction of exotic specis (approximately 600) from other places. Various native and exotic trees, shurbs, herbs, climbers, aquatic plants, cacti and succulents have been collected and maintained for imparting knowledge to our students as well as related scientists. Flower shows are organized from time to time.
  • The department has 9 screening houses near the college building.
  • The department has developed 20 salinity micro plots to determine phyto-remediating potential of halophytic flora and 24 lysimeter have been installed in field to determine the transpirational potential of trees having importannce in bio-drainage.
  • Experimental farms spread over 25 acres have been developed to evaluate bio-drainage potential of trees to improve waterlogged soils.

Package and Practices

system having Eucalyptus tereticornis as a strip plantation should be established on the water logged soils. In this model north to south field boundary is converted into 2.6 m wide and 45 cm high raised bund on which two rows of trees can be planted. The intervening space is left for the crops with minimum of shade effect due to the north-south direction of bunds initiated by Drs. O.P. Toky, Rajiv Angrish and J.C. Kaushik included in the HAU Package of Practices.
