Chaudhary Charan Singh, Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar has evolved and established a network of innovative science based institutions, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, for human resource development to train the farmers, farm women and extension workers and to involve the Kendra in the process of technology generation with vocational courses in agriculture and allied fields. The KVK is a grassroots level institution to impart need based and skill oriented short and long-term vocational training coursed for agricultural clients.
Emphasis is being laid on ameliorating the conditions of the small, marginal and agricultural labourers. In order to serve the farming community of the district Ambala, CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar established Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ambala at Ambala City in 2ndFebruary, 1970. It has its own 37 acres farm land. The Kendra works on the principle of collaborative participation of Scientists, Subject Matter Specialists, Extension Workers and farmers. The detailed description of existence of Krishi Vigyan Kendra is given as under:
Establishment of Krishi Vigyan Kendra: Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Ambala the erstwhile Krishi Gyan Kendra was established since back prior to establishment of Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar under the Directorate of Extension Education, Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana. Haryana Agricultural University came into existence on 2 February 1970 as a result of reorganization of Punjab Agricultural University through the Parliament Act. The Krishi Gyan Kendra(KGK) Ambala came under the administrative control of Haryana Agricultural University Hisar on 2 February 1970. Therefore, the Krishi Gyan Kendra Ambala under HAU started functioning on 2 February 1970. The KGK building was inaugurated by Col Maha Singh, the then Agriculture Minister, Govt. of Haryana on 27 February 1976. It is situated in Ambala City (near district courts) located in north eastern corner of Haryana at National Highway-1 and about 45 Km. from State Capital Chandigarh and about 180 Km. from the headquarter i.e. HAU Hisar.
History of changes in organization: In the beginning, there were three components at the centre viz. Krishi Gyan Kendra, Research centre on Wheat under Rain fed Conditions and Disease Investigation Laboratory (Veterinary). Krishi Gyan Kendra was renamed as Krishi Vigyan Kendra to have the uniform nomenclature throughout Haryana. In the year 2003, wheat research scheme was converted in to vegetable research scheme and later on, in 2006 the research component was merged in to KVK with simultaneous research on rain fed wheat. The research component on wheat research under rain fed conditions remained operational till 2014-15. With the reorganization of CCS HAU Hisar and creation of new university i.e. Lala Lajpat Rai University of Veterinary and Animal Science on 01.12.2010, the disease investigation laboratory at KVK Ambala came under the administrative control of new university on 07.04.2010
