About College of Biotechnology
Biotechnology is a broad discipline in which biological processes, organisms, cells or cellular components are exploited to develop new technologies for the benefit of mankind. It is one of the young courses in the educational arena as compared to other disciplines. Biotechnology has been growing very rapidly giving new tools and products which are useful in research, agriculture, industry and the health. Thus, the role of biotechnology here becomes to find out the best possible technological measure that does not disturb nature much and finally proves to be beneficial for the mankind. There are various kinds of microorganisms and small particles which need to be exploited to render them useful to mankind in various ways, such as help in manufacturing of medicine, or their extractions can be used in as vaccines. Not only this, biotechnology also includes study and disposal mechanisms of various wastes in a way that they do not harm any biological diversity. Biotechnology also has immense potential in the agriculture, with a wide range of applications that include marker assisted selection, climate resilience, molecular breeding, sex identification in dioecious plants, characterization of agronomically important traits, market-driven products etc.
The Department of Biotechnology and Molecular Biology (BMB) was established at CCS Haryana Agricultural University, Hisar in January 1997. Before 1997, it existed in the form of a Biotechnology Centre with research and teaching (M.Sc. only). The department was renamed as Molecular Biology and Biotechnology (MBB) in 2009 and again renamed as Molecular Biology, Biotechnology and Bioinformatics with the merger of Bioinformatics into MBB in 2014 Today, MBBB is recognized as one of the best and leading Departments for research and teaching in various fields of Plant Biotechnology and Molecular Biology and Bioinformatics. The Department offered basic and applied courses in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Plant and Animal Tissue Culture, Genetic Engineering, Immunology, Biotechnology, Environment and Bioinformatics etc. to the postgraduate students of the constituent colleges of the University.
Realizing the potential of various applications of biotechnology in teaching and research in the areas of agriculture, industry and environment, CCS Haryana Agricultural University has established a College of Biotechnology in 2022 with five departments namelyDepartment of Agricultural Biotechnology, Department of Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, Department of Industrial Biotechnology, Department of Bioinformatics & Computational Biology, Department of Bio-nanotechnology. The College aims to impart practical based multidisciplinary education in biotechnology by inculcating/encouraging creative thought process among students with a focused vision. All the Masters programs are designed with emphasis on generating quality workforce and instill spirit of innovation in young minds. The doctoral program advances biotechnological research by providing quality infrastructure for exploitation of technologies for the benefit of society. The college is supported with state of art facilities for production of quality planting material using micro-propagation technology at commercial level. The human resources, thus generated, will be helpful for creation of knowledge based equitable social order and wealth for the nation by solving local as well as global problems.
