The Department of Economics was started in 1962 with the establishment of Hisar Campus of the erstwhile Punjab Agricultural University. It became a full-fledged department in 1970 with the formation of Haryana Agricultural University.Initially, the Department was located in the College of Basic Sciences and Humanities and later on in 1978, it was shifted to College of Agriculture as Department of Agricultural Economics. There are 15 faculty members in the dscipline of which seven are working at main Campus and eight are pooled at outstations including KVKs. Agricultural Economics in total working at different directorates including out stations. The department has achieved many distinctions in various academic activities.The prestigious distinctions like the Dr. Rajendra Prasad Award for writing the university level text book in Hindi language, Jawaharlal Nehru Award for outstanding post-graduate agricultural research, Young Scientist Award, two Best Teachers Awards, and Professor of Emeritus have been bagged by the scientists of this department. As, it is not possible to carry out the controlled experiments in this discipline, efforts are made to observe the occurrences of various phenomena which affect the decision making process of the households, particularly the rural people and relevant data are collected and analysed by using the scientific tools and techniques. The research outcomes of the department are published in the form of research/technical bulletins which help the policy makers in planning for betterment of farmers and rural community of the state as well country as a whole.
